Description

Fort Point is a narrow strip of land on the NE corner of New Castle Island. Located near the entrance of Portsmouth Harbor, it’s been the site of numerous fortifications dating back to 1634. After serving the British as Fort William and Mary, it was rechristened Fort Constitution by The United States in 1808. The fort is currently under the management of New Hampshire State Parks and has been recently closed due to safety concerns while assessments of the historic structures are made.

In the Spring of 2023, Direct Dimensions joined staff from Aeon Preservation on site to document the existing conditions of the fort walls, grounds, and associated buildings. Direct Dimensions employed ground-based scanning and aerial drone photography to completely capture the site. Due to the inaccessibility of certain walls by land and the additional need for extensive scaffolding to reach the higher walls, photogrammetry also served as the primary resource for condition assessment of much of the fort walls.

In addition to the typical delivery of a color point cloud and CAD drawings for the project, Direct Dimensions provided CAD-based orthogonal images with a pixel resolution of 2mm of each wall elevation. The images replaced costly rock-to-rock drawings and were used to annotate condition assessment and preservation recommendations.
