Description

The Here movie, starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, will be released to theaters on November 1, 2024 by TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures. Based on a novel by Richard McGuire, it follows the history of one home over the course of a century, and the generations of families that inhabit it. The film is directed by Robert Zemeckis, who co-wrote the screenplay with Eric Roth, bringing the director, writer, and stars of Forrest Gump (1994) back together.

Direct Dimensions was hired to digitize the Shirley Plantation House, a historic landmark based in Charles City, VA, for the background visuals of the film. Our team traveled on-site in the fall of 2022 to scan the property using a Leica RTC 360 scanner and ground/drone based digital photography to capture lidar and texture. We then post processed the lidar scans and photogrammetry to create high-resolution, raw 3D models of various parts of the plantation.

The Shirley Plantation House is seen throughout much of the film in the window of the living room of the house where the entire movie takes place. Since “Here” is intentionally set in one room, from one fixed-point of view, the setting and background features remain constant while time and the people living in the house are what change throughout the film.
