Develop a scanner to capture the faces of premature infants in order to design properly-fitting CPAP masks
Premature infants require positive pressure masks (CPAP) to help them breathe — but masks aren’t designed for such tiny babies. The Mayo Clinic embarked on a project to create a series of properly-sized CPAP masks for premies. To do this, they needed to scan babies faces with a device that would be suitable for use in the NICU.
We developed a photogrammatic camera array that fit inside a box small enough to place over a bassinet. This required the use of Pi-cams (cellphone-sized cameras operated by Raspberry Pi processors) to get the cameras close enough together. We prototyped the camera spacing, then made a custom box and assembled the system in about a month — in time for the intern at Mayo who was managing the project to finish before the end of the summer.
